An Evening with Raimund
Press release
Wuppertal, 20 April 2023. Eleven days, nine cities, three world premieres. For the ninth time, North Rhine-Westphalia becomes a hub for contemporary dance during the tanz nrw 23 festival. tanz nrw is a festival taking place every other year in several cities across North Rhine-Westphalia. It is organized and initiated by Tanzproduzent:innen-Konferenz NRW (TpK), an organizers’ association of NRW institutions that both organize and produce dance. The city of Wuppertal is a member of the association which consists of production houses and cultural departments.
From Münster to Bonn, a selection of the latest productions by choreographers and collectives working in NRW in 2023 will be shown. 200 applications for the stage programme and more than 60 submissions for the digital programme were reviewed, discussed and selected. In addition to established companies who receive the highest level of funding from the state of NRW, there are also young talents whose works give new impulses to the scene. What they have in common is a challenging rehearsal period over the past two years. How to rehearse when the theatres are closed – and with subsequently overcrowded schedules? The answer is to expand the repertoire into the digital realm. Hence the creation of many very different online formats, in addition to the analogue stage productions. 22 stage productions and many other formats will be shown from 4 to 14 May 2023 in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Essen, Cologne, Krefeld, Mülheim/Ruhr, Münster, Viersen, Wuppertal and on the „Digital Stage“.
In Wuppertal, tanz nrw will take place at Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof, Insel e.V./Kultur im Café Ada and the Pina Bausch Zentrum (see attachment). The ensemble of Raimund Hoghe, who sadly passed away before his time in 2021, will give a guest performance in the former Schauspielhaus and future Pina Bausch Zentrum. The performance is a tribute to the Wuppertal-born choreographer, dancer, author, dramaturge, journalist and filmmaker. He was associated with the city throughout his life, working as long-time dramaturge of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, among other things.
He has been awarded several prizes. In 2019, The French Cultural Ministry appointed Raimund Hoghe “Officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres”. In October 2020, he received the German Dance Award, Germany's most prestigious award for choreographers. http://www.raimundhoghe.com/english.php

“An Evening with Raimund” is a performance with excerpts from Raimund Hoghe’s oeuvre 2002–2019, arranged by Luca Giacomo Schulte and Emmanuel Eggermont.
In “An Evening with Raimund”, dancers who used to work with the late Raimund Hoghe revive excerpts of his choreographic oeuvre. Raimund Hoghe died on 14 May 2021 at the age of 72. He is one of the most important international choreographers and has set standards both aesthetically and politically. In excerpts, the dancers commemorate the choreographer and his path with great dedication, evoking people, feelings and the power of music – everything that Raimund Hoghe shared with his audience. “Don’t cry, there’ll be another spring / I know our hearts will dance again / And sing again, so wait for me till then…“ Peggy Lee, aus dem Stück Young People, Old Voices (2002).
