We are looking for dance enthusiasts from Wuppertal for our extraordinary choreographic happening Wundertal / Sonnborner Straße.

What is Wundertal / Sonnborner Straße?

From May 21 – 29, 2023 we will organize Wundertal, a series of different events and pieces. In doing so, we would like to work in and with the city, open up new common, intense paths and dance together. To this end, we invite up to 200 people from Wuppertal from the age of 16 to join the dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal and its new artistic director Boris Charmatz in creating a unique performance directly on Sonnborner Straße.

What are the requirements and how much time do I need?

The project is open to all people – regardless of fitness or movement level. We strive to make the project emotionally, physically, spiritually and culturally accessible to all who are interested. Dance experience is not a requirement to your participate. We rehearse for a total of approximately 30 hours over 10 days. In addition, you must allow 5 hours on performance day.

Rehearsal & performance days are:

Monday, May 8 rehearsal from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tuesday, May 9 rehearsal from 6 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday, May 10 rehearsal from 6 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, May 13 rehearsal from 2 to 6 p.m.
Sunday, May 14 rehearsal from 2 to 6 p.m.
Wednesday, May 17 rehearsal from 6 to 9 p.m.
Thursday, May 18 rehearsal from 2 to 6 p.m.
Friday, May 19 rehearsal from 6 to 9 p.m.
Saturday, May 20 rehearsal & dress rehearsal from 1 to 6 p.m.
Sunday, May 21 rehearsal & performance from 1 to 6 p.m.
Important: Participation is only possible if you can attend all rehearsal dates as well as the performance.

How do you become part of Wundertal / Sonnborner Straße?

Do you live in the Wuppertal area, do you want to meet new people and want to be part of something extraordinary? Then fill out our short questionnaire here. Among all applicants we will invite up to 200 participants. You will receive a binding written confirmation of participation from mid-March.

Application form

In May 2023 we are celebrating Wundertal: a series of events and pieces that reflect our desire to work in and with the city of Wuppertal, to dance and to go on a journey together. It will open with Wundertal / Sonnborner Straße, a large-scale choreographic happening for 200 dancers, and close with Palermo Palermo at the Wuppertal Opera House.

The first edition of the project entitled Sea Change was originally commissioned for the opening of Manchester International Festival 2021 and produced by Manchester International Festival and [terrain].

The project Wundertal by Boris Charmatz in May 2023 is a contribution to the preparatory phase of the Pina Bausch Centre and is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Wuppertal, as well as by Stadtsparkasse Wuppertal. 

Wundertal is a project of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, [terrain] and the Pina Bausch Zentrum.
